I didn’t grow up expecting life to collapse. My childhood looked normal on the surface—sports, school, family—but when my mother died suddenly, everything shifted. The loss left a hole I didn’t know how to fill, and in that emptiness I started down a path of anger, bad decisions, and eventually addiction. What started as small escapes quickly became survival, until drugs and alcohol dictated everything.
By my late teens and early twenties, I was living out of my car, arrested more times than I can count, and alienated from almost everyone who once cared about me. I stole from friends, broke trust with family, and lost my own sense of worth. At my lowest, I wasn’t just addicted—I was empty, convinced my story was already over.
Then came the turning point. A police officer asking if I had anywhere safe to sleep. A stranger’s simple words of belief. A night at the Rescue Mission that forced me to see the truth: I could keep running toward destruction, or I could stop and choose something different. That moment was the beginning of my recovery—not a miracle cure, but the start of learning how to persevere through each day, one small step at a time.
Recovery didn’t erase my past, but it gave me the tools to build a future. I rebuilt relationships, worked at the very shelter that once took me in, and eventually found my way into leadership, business, and family. Along the way I learned that perseverance isn’t glamorous—it’s waking up, facing your truth, and choosing to keep going when it would be easier to quit.
Today, I speak because my story isn’t just about me. It’s proof that change is possible, no matter how far gone things seem. I use my journey—from rock bottom to resilience—to challenge audiences to see their own lives differently, to stop moving the goalposts on themselves, and to believe that their next chapter can be stronger than the last.
